A plot twist in a movie is a great way to keep an audience on its toes, to keep 'em guessing. That's especially hard to do with comic films because it's already based on subject matter that's been poured over, loved, and scrutinized. So if you succeed in surprising the comic fans... they'll inevitably be mad that you changed the source material. There's no real winning in that scenario.
Another problem is that in the current day and age, technology has made it nearly impossible for filmmakers to get away with anything. Spy pictures and footage leaks on a daily basis, and the moment any news about a comic film is uttered, it is instantly plastered on every corner of the Internet.
Needless to say, it's hard to successfully get away with putting a twist in a comic film, but these are those brave few that have done it. These are the 11 most shocking twists in comic book films! Beware of spoilers!

Miranda Revealed
After falling in love with Miranda Tate, an industrialist trying to help Wayne Enterprises save the world, we discover that she's actually Talia al Ghul, daughter of Ra's al Ghul.
Not only that, but we learn she's been pulling Bane's strings throughout the film.
The Mandarin Revealed
Perhaps the biggest (and most offensive to comic fans) twist in years was the reveal that after months of amazing marketing, an impressive buildup of hype for his performance, and Ben Kingsley killing it in the role... it was revealed that Kingsley was just an actor named Trevor Slattery hired to portray The Mandarin, a made up terrorist.
The Mandarin is one of Iron Man's oldest and most powerful adversaries, it would be like revealing The Green Goblin was a robot. Alas, it happened... and we were certainly surprised.
The Identity of the Winter Soldier
In the comics, it was once said that something was as dead as Bucky, and this probably wasn't a big (or possibly any) shock to comic fans but The Winter Soldier, that badass gun toting, silver-armed mercenary we'd seen in all the trailers, was in fact Bucky Barnes.
Steve Rogers long lost, assumed-to be dead friend from the war ended up being similarly frozen but got the rough end of the stick when he was brainwashed and turned into a spy.
The Fate of Gwen Stacy
Not a twist at all for Spider-Man fans (who actually knew this was happening as soon as they saw her outfit in the trailers) but oh well... Gwen Stacy is killed by the Green Goblin in Amazing Spider-Man 2. They built up this amazing love story (just as in the comics), showing how perfect they are together, and they begin planning a long term life together when she's kidnapped and thrown down a clock tower. Spider-Man goes to save her but his webline catches just too late (a change from the comics wherein he may or may not have snapped her neck himself, leaving him permanently guilt ridden) and she's killed instantly.
A nice tease for Spidey fans was having an entire tense conversation, with her in that iconic outfit, on the bridge where she's killed in the comics. They swing away from the bridge no problem, but the audience in the know was on edge throughout.
Nick Fury's Fate
Fairly early in the Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Nick Fury is killed after an incredible, long and tense, chase scene. He's dead. There's a tombstone and an autopsy. Audiences had been predicting this for months with some of the foreshadowing in the trailer and rumors that Samuel L Jackson's contract was running out for the Marvel films.
Just kidding! He's fine, it was a fake out. He used some stuff that guy Bruce Banner tried to use to calm his rage, which slowed his heart to nearly a stop.
Obadiah Stane's True Colors
Obadiah Stane, trusted Stark employee, father figure to Tony, lifetime friend to his father Howard Stark, is revealed to be the one who sold Tony out to the terrorists. He goes a step further, stealing the arc reactor and making his own Iron Man suit, the Iron Monger, and attacking Iron Man for complete control of Stark Industries.
That bald/beard combo should've been a dead giveaway.
Officer Blakes Full Name
After going by John Blake throughout the film, Joseph Gordon Levitt is summoned to collect his portion of Bruce Wayne's will (which turns out to be the fricken Batcave and its contents), but he has to give his full name, Robin John Blake.
He's Robin, you guys! Shameless, fun, twist.
Who Sits on The Throne Of Asgard?
At the end of Thor: The Dark World, we pan up on Odin sitting upon his throne looking over Asgard, and then he's revealed to be Loki after all. So where's Odin? Did Loki kill him? Has he been planning this from the beginning and only acting as a hero for this greater goal? Awesome twist.
The Joker's Plan
For a guy who claims not to be a schemer, he sure had one convoluted scheme going.
The Joker kidnaps Rachel and Harvey Dent, ties them to fuel drums attached to timed detonators. He then attacks Batman, get's arrested on purpose, goes to prison where he taunts Batman into beating him half to death, then fights a cop in order to makes his one phone call, which activates a bomb that he had previously planted in this fat inmates stomach, which blows up, giving him access to Lau to complete his plan. Whew, schemey.
The secondary twist (beyond being caught on purpose) is that he switched Harvey and Rachel and convinced Batman to inadvertently save Harvey Dent (turning him into Two-Face) and killing Rachel.
Alexander Pierce's Allegiance
Throughout the film we assume Alexander Pierce is a good dude because, ya know, Redford. The trailers paint him rather ominously, and we assume he might be a bad guy, but all those fears are for nothing because, ya know that Robert Redford sure is swell. Then suddenly, Boom! He's an agent of Hydra who's been infiltrating the infrastructure of S.H.I.E.L.D. for years with Hydra agents. S.H.I.E.L.D. has to be destroyed, and the shape of the Marvel cinematic universe is forever altered.
