Good Oral Health: What to Eat
The important factors for keep your oral health in good condition are what to eat and how often you should eat? There are several foods that start acting on your teeth the minute you eat them. The decay process starts when the bacteria present in your mouth convert the carbohydrates and sugar present in your food to acids, these acids combine with the saliva and food residual in the mouth which in turn attack the enamel of your teeth. Every time you eat these foods you expose your teeth to decay.

Cheese
A derivative of milk, cheese is a great source of calcium which in turn is a basic ingredient to keep teeth and bones healthy. When you eat cheese, it makes a coating of calcium on the teeth and hence prevents tooth decay. 
Mushrooms
Especially the Shiitake mushrooms are known to prevent gingivitis. Gingivitis is an inflammatory dental disease that is characterized by the redness and swelling of gums due to built-up of bacterial growth. ‘Lentinan’ that is a sugar contained in Shiitake mushrooms is known for its antimicrobial properties against the bacteria that cause gingivitis.
 While giving preference to above teeth-friendly foods make it a point to keep away from foods that take long to chew as our teeth remain exposed to them for longer times. Also foods that have high sugar and carbohydrates should be avoided.

Raw Onions
Raw onions have sulfur containing compounds that are anti microbial in nature. They have the potency to eradicate four strains of bacteria that are deemed responsible for tooth decay.
Strawberries and Kiwi Fruit
Strawberries and kiwis are rich sources of vitamin c which is very good for our dental health. Gums are made up of collagen, without collagen gums become weak and tender and get highly prone to dental diseases. Vitamin C prevents this collagen from breaking down. These fruits are also natural astringents. They help in preventing discoloration of teeth that is caused by tea and coffee that are commonly consumed beverages.
Apples
“An apple a day keeps the doctor at bay”. This is an old saying, but it has more truth than fiction. Apples are the natural toothbrushes, they increase the saliva, helps in stimulating the gums and prevents plaque formation and hence reduces tooth decay. Moreover, they are heavily loaded with important vitamins and minerals that are essential for our body.
Seeds and Nuts
Brazil Nuts and Sesame seeds are power packed with plant based proteins and teeth friendly micronutrients such as zinc, phosphorous, magnesium, potassium and calcium. They help in tooth re-mineralization.
Green Tea
Green tea which is also known as Camellia Sinensis, contain certain anti oxidants that have a special ability to kill the bacteria that convert sugar to plaque in your mouth. Bacterial infections of teeth and inflammation of gums can also be controlled by consuming green tea. They are good sources of ‘Catechins’. It has antimicrobial properties that help to maintain good oral health. Besides, green tea is also rich in fluoride which helps strengthen teeth. It has been proved in scientific research that those who consume green tea daily have good dental health in comparison to those who consume normal tea.
