Fresh into its first season, Gotham is taking to the dark side in telling the backstory of DC Comics super villains and vigilantes in a brand new way.

Discovering details behind the show is about as hard as trying to figure out where it's all going. But there's quite a bit to be learned from the gritty city of Gotham. Which villains will we see in the show? Is it us, or does Alfred seem different than how he's usually portrayed? And will Batman ever make an appearance? All burning questions that apparently the show's writers know, but we don't just yet.

Ben McKenzie Spent His Birthday in an ER After Getting Injured On-Set
If he were a superhero, it wouldn’t have been an issue. Detective Gordon is no match for a concrete pillar – and neither is Ben McKenzie – after he slammed into one on-set the day of his birthday. He instagrammed the entire event, posting photos of a really nasty gash he got after getting injured while filming Gotham.

Robin Lord Taylor said he uses an old Hollywood trick to keep the Penguin’s limp on-point: he places a bottle cap in his right shoe that brings just enough pain to make him walk uneasy.

Jada Pinkett-Smith Took a Man on a Leash to Her Audition
Jada Pinkett-Smith is a big name in the industry, but she really wanted to make her mark when auditioning for the role of Fish Mooney. At a panel for Gotham, she admitted to showing up for her audition dressed in character with an added accessory: a young, shirtless man on a leash with the word "LIAR" written in lipstick across his forehead. Talk about getting into character.

Alfred Pennyworth is a Pseudonym
Alfred's middle name, Thaddeus Crane, was the character's original name. Pennyworth derived from Alfred believing his life's worth was only a penny.

Gotham is Full of Easter Eggs
Diehard D.C. Comics fans should keep their eyes peeled, because there are more than enough references and nods to the comic books and earlier on-screen versions, like when Bruce Wayne is watching The Mask of Zorro the night his parents die.
Auditions for the Show Were Top Secret
Robin Lord Taylor said the auditions for the show were so top secret that he didn't even know what he was auditioning for. He was given a fake script that had fake character names.

The Joker Will Make an Appearance
There's a careful plan in how the Joker will be revealed, and it will be a "slow burn" process by teasing the audience with several different minor characters who could potentially be the Joker. From playing cards to sh*t-eating grins to ridiculous flower boutonnieres, these characters will display all sorts of tiny Jokerisms, and show runners are planning on playing out the process for as long as possible.
